This morning after walking around Cottonwood Campground and taking in the beauty of Kluane Lake we packed up and moved on. Before leaving the Kluane Lake area we did stop at the Visitor Center hoping to get a view of Dall Sheep on the mountains but none were visible at that time. We continued on the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction where we then took the Haines Highway traveling through the Yukon Territory and then British Columbia. Another day of breath-taking views of beautiful lakes as Dezadeash Lake and snow covered mountains. A porcupine crossed the road in front of us.
This was the second porcupine we have seen this trip. About 40 miles from Haines we had to go through customs to get back into the USA without any difficulty.
We followed the Chilkat River into Haines. This is a very fast moving river with several fish wheels in operation. When we arrived in Haines we followed Main Street to Front Street where the Oceanside Campground is located. Not having reservations, the manager of the campground did not think she could fit us in tonight but after much maneuvering on her part she finally was able to do it. This campground is located overlooking the fjord. It is absolutely beautiful.
We went out to get a late lunch. We then went to the Ferry Terminal to make arrangements to take our RVs on the Ferry on Thursday to Skagway- we plan to be here until then. We had hoped to go to Juneau for a day from here but everything is booked up so we may need to arrange that trip from Skagway unless there is a cancellation. Joanne and I needed to get haircuts so the campground manager told us of a salon to go to where we were able to get appointments for this afternoon and we got our much needed haircuts. This evening we sat outside watching the ferry and cruise ships traveling the fjord from Skagway. The weather is wonderful here- sunny and warm (70’s).
