A little slow moving this morning as we did not have any plans to be anywhere or do anything. Last night was the first night since being in the Alaska/ Yukon Territory that it was dark outside when we went to bed at 11pm- but the sun rises early, probably by 4am. We talked to the campground manager this morning about the Fjord cruise to Juneau and she was going to check about any cancellation that would allow us to go on the cruise tomorrow. We left the campground and drove out to Chilkoot State Park and Chilkoot Lake, a most beautiful area of tall pine trees, blue water in the creek and lake with snow covered mountains in the background.
We drove around Fort Stewart which now is shops, bed and breakfast, and private residences. We stopped at a smoked salmon store, sampled the various smoked fish and bought a few items.
Another shop had jewelry and Alaskan art that we admired but did not purchase. Returning to the campground, the campground manager had good news we would be able to go to Juneau tomorrow as we had hoped. Joanne and I prepared dishes (Joanne, barbeque beans and me, pasta salad) for dinner at the campground this evening. Late afternoon we drove the opposite direction from this morning to Chikat State Park, a pine forested area with an observation deck that glaciers can be viewed across the channel of water.
We were hoping to see a bear but we didn’t. We did see eagles, though. Returning to the campground, we ate with other campers this evening- Dungeness crabs and the pot luck dishes.
The crabs were $6.00 each and we each ordered 1 crab which was plenty. It was a nice evening except it had gotten colder and windy so everyone ate fast in order to get inside and warm.
