About 8:45am this morning we boarded the Fjord Express to Juneau on a chilly, rainy morning. The catamaran boat had passengers on board from Skagway when the 4 of us plus 1 other man got on board in Haines so the seats were pretty well filled. The captain, Glenn, and his 16 year old daughter and first mate, Anna, were the crew. It was a little more than 2 hours to Juneau. We did see some whales and sea lions.
When we got to Port Juneau we were picked up in a bus to be transported to Juneau about 30 minutes away. In Juneau we walked about the restaurant/shopping area among the thousands of cruise ship patrons (there were 4 ships in Juneau today).
We ate lunch at a Mexican restaurant and then spent the remainder of the 3 hours looking in shops and buying a few things. Again we boarded the bus and were taken to the Mendenhall Glacier and Visitor’s Center another place packed with tourists.
We were able to watch the movie in the Visitor’s Center before reboarding the bus to be returned back to the boat. On the return trip we were given a cup of smoked salmon chowder, a roll and a cookie. Again we saw more whale, seals and sea lions. We passed several cruise ships probably leaving from Skagway. A little before 8pm we got back to the motorhome. It was a long day- the weather was rainy and cool all day, the seas were choppy and rough and Travis had a long time alone but we can now say we have been to Juneau, Alaska’s capitol.
