Yarnell

Since we did not make it to Yarnell yesterday we decided we would go there today. We also decided to take the main road and not some dirt road as we tried yesterday. Yarnell is about 9 miles north of Congress but those miles go across a mountain. The little shops were all closed today, it seems that they are only open on weekends or Wednesday through the weekend. We found a restaurant that was open, "Rumor Grille", and decided to eat lunch there.

From the outside, it didn't look like anything out of the ordinary, a xerox sign on the door stated it was fine dining. Once inside we were pleasantly surprised that it looked like a really nice restaurant with table cloths even.

The menu had a nice variety of burgers, soups, salads as well as dinners. We elected to eat lunch foods- Tom had a California burger with avocado, red onion and Swiss cheese served with potato salad, I had the Chef's omelet which today's omelet was a avocado, red onion and Swiss cheese omelet served with a Caesar salad. Tom also had a piece of pecan pie. All the food was very good and portions were more than adequate. We were told that the chef makes the salads (potato and others) and the soups daily.
While eating in this restaurant there was a group of 7 young men (3 Asian-that spoke very little English- and 4 Caucasions-one that did some interpreting) dining there also. We all left the restaurant about the same time. We noticed 2 vehicles parked along the street that had clothe covers covering the entire vehicle which this group of men went to and removed the covers. The vehicles that were uncovered were both different but both had their hoods covered with some kind of material and the bodies were white with black stripes. There were 2 other normal looking vehicles that this group had also. As they drove off we were perplexed as to what the story was with this group and their vehicles. Later in the day we met up with a trio of bicyclists. Thinking that they may be local folks I asked them if they knew what those vehicles were. They also had seen the vehicles but didn't know what the story was but as we talked one speculated that they may have been prototype vehicles disquised as to not give away any secrets of new vehicle developement. Sounds reasonable.

We drove about the town and found at the end of one street the Shrine of Saint Joseph. This Shrine was in a rocky hillside. The 14 stations of the cross were placed within the rocks of the hillside. It was a fairly steep climb up the rustic stone steps that went to the top and then down. It was a pretty area with statues of Christ incorporated in the rocks.

We drove a little further to Peeples Valley. In this valley there were several large ranches with beef cattle or horses.
On the return drive we stopped at a viewing pull-off as we descended the mountain. We had passed a large dairy farm yesterday that we could now see just how big it was. We also could see the many dirt roads that were in the desert area below.

As we were passing through Congress we stopped to take a picture of "Frog Rock" a large rock that has been painted like a frog. There is a restaurant nearby called the "Frog Rock Cafe".

The weather was nice today but tonight rain is expected to start and the next 2 days are to be rainy.

Congress and Stanton

After picking up some groceries in Wickenburg we drove around the area. We went toward the north from the campground to the town of Congress. We stopped at a "Trading Post" which turned out to be an antique/junk store. The residences in Congress were mainly house trailers. There was an area of new construction of nice looking homes. The town has little in the way of stores.

A little further to the north off on a dirt road we drove to the ghost town of Stanton. There is gold in this area so many prospectors are in this area doing their thing. The town has been made into a campground and it appeared to be full.

We drove on further toward the town of Yarnell but when we came to a creek running across the road and the river bed had some sizable rocks we turned around. We came across another road that pointed to Yarnell. We attempted that road until the rocks seem to be growing in size and at that point we turned around going out past Stanton the way we had come from. As we were driving around this area we were close to the mountains we had seen in the distance. These mountains are like huge piles of large boulders with saquaro cactus growing between the rocks.

A Quiet Sunday

What beautiful weather we are having here. Clear blue skies with temperatures getting to the upper 60's during the day and dropping down into the 40's at night. North Ranch, the Escapees campground, is well maintained. There is a large area of owned residences that are landscaped in the southwestern style with cacti and stones of various sizes and colors. It is enjoyable to walk about these grounds. There is an area that has a large cactus garden including a huge Saquaro (Methuselah) cactus believed to be one of the oldest in the state.
We rode into the small town of Congress today to get a Sunday paper. This evening there was a ice cream social here at the campground which we attended.

Good-Bye Havasu, Hello Wickenburg

Our medicines arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday. Don't know why the change but I'm glad we got them. At this point we were set to be able to move on as we wanted to do on Friday January 29th. Our time spent in Lake Havasu City was a time of relaxation. We walked morning and evenings about the campground with Travis. Some days he seem to be walking well, other days a little slow. Tom and I spent time with our new toy- Wii Fit- each day. Twice we went to the movies to see "The Book of Eli" and then "Avatar". Both movies were set in the future but differed greatly from one another. Surprisingly, I liked both movies. "Avatar" in 3-D is an absolutely amazing movie, the special effects are are done so that it is so real appearing and the colors throughout the movie are just beautiful. "The Book of Eli" as oppose to "Avatar" is done throughout in drab coloring as the theme of the movie is depressing with an interesting ending.
Friday we left Havasu and headed for Wickenburg. We traveled route I-40 to Kingman, Az. and then route 93 to Congress, Az. The trip was a little less than 200 miles but we traversed some interesting and changing environments. Leaving Havasu we started climbing the barren mountains of that region. As we headed south from Kingman we were again in mountains but with some vegetation and the Saquaro cacti started appearing on the mountainsides. As we got closer to Congress we drove through a segment of road called the Joshua Tree Forest Parkway, one of the largest stands of Joshua trees. After passing through Congress and before Wickenburg we are staying at an Escapees Park, North Ranch. We had stayed here several years ago.
Today, Saturday, we went into Wickenburg. We noticed some changes since the last time we were here. Some new road construction with a new bridge. The Hassayampa River was completely dry. The last time we were here the river was raging so bad that some houses were lost along the banks of the river. We found that a Mexican restaurant, Filiberto's, was still in operation so we had lunch there without being disappointed.
Our neighbor, husband and wife, here at the RV park went prospecting for gold today. They go to an area to gather their specimens and then return to the campground to wash the materials looking for specks of gold. Tom spent some time observing the process. Some flakes of gold were found. Apparently this is a hobby for several RVer's in this park.

Typical Monday

Just like Monday when I'm home, today was laundry day. Another bright sunny day with the temperature getting in the upper 60's.
Our plans were to move from Lake Havasu City on Friday. We have been staying here waiting for our mail order prescriptions. We thought that surely in 2 weeks we would have received our meds. Today Tom called the service and we were told that the meds would not be shipped until Friday. Bummer!!! We decided we were still going to move and have the meds sent to another location. When Tom checked in to give another address he learned that part of the order was shipped today and the remainder to be shipped tomorrow. Don't know what caused the change but hope the meds get here in the next day or two.

Oatman, Arizona

Traveling a little over 50 miles to the north from Lake Havasu City, we visited the town of Oatman. Oatman about 100 years ago was a flourishing gold mining center until 1942 when gold mining was no longer essential to the war effort. Today it remains as authentic as possible as a western ghost town and mining camp.

Gunfights in the street are done several times during the day. A little hokey but all done in fun and afterwards a hat is passed with the money received donated to the Shriner's Hospital.

Wild burros come into the street to mingle with the tourists. Carrots can be purchased for feeding the burros and the burros become rather aggressive when they know someone has the carrots.

There are a variety of shops along the street along with several restaurants. One shop had paintings on sandstone done by local artists that were unique. Many shops had the touristy t-shirts and trinkets.
The town is located on U.S. Route 66, a federally funded "Back Road By-Way".

Most of the way is uninhabited, mountainous desert environment. Today was a beautiful sunny day but a little cool in this higher elevation.

Clear Skies, Finally

Yesterday morning the rains had stopped but the clouds were still hanging around. By noon the skies were clearing and bright sunshine was upon us. In the evening we drove to an ice cream parlor- "Scoops"- that makes their own ice cream. Some of the best ice cream we have had and great flavors- Peanut butter banana, Pecan Praline to name a few.
Last night, without cloud cover, got a little cold (40's) and tonight will be the same. Once the sun is up things warm up fairly quickly. It was in the upper 60's today. The campground had a sausage and pancake breakfast this morning which we went to being the last ones through the line. We should have gotten up earlier! We rode into the business area of the town today and walked around checking out some of the stores that were opened. We ate lunch at the Red Onion restaurant. Before returning to the campground we stopped on the island side of the London Bridge. There are mainly restaurants here. The one shop that was opened seemed pricey- T-shirts with an iron on was $22.00.
We are hearing that the storm that passed through Arizona has dumped a lot of snow(several feet) in the Grand Canyon and Sedona areas. Now we are debating where our next move will be. We will see how the weather and conditions are later in the week before changing our plans.

And the Rains Came

During the night it began to rain heavy and has continued to rain throughout the day. It is predicted that 2 inches of rain will fall today; if so, that coupled with the rain that had already fallen this week will be over half of the total rainfall(4.54inches/year) for the year in this area. There has also been spells of heavy winds. Last night we awoke hearing the winds blowing our window awnings. So Tom got out of bed and went outside to put the awnings up.
This morning we went to the grocery store to restock our food supply. At that time it was sprinkling rain but this afternoon the skies blackened and then it just poured. In this weather there isn't much to do except stay inside and wait for it to pass. There are some things we would like to do in this area, like a boat ride on Lake Havasu, but certainly not in this weather. We are going to stay here for another week so hopefully next week it will clear up and we will be able to do somethings outside.

Cloudy Days

Yesterday and today have been cloudy days and according to the weather forecast this could continue for several more days. We stayed in the campground yesterday and observed the clouds building up all day until evening when it rained hard for several hours.
This morning was sunny but by noon the clouds were again building but so far it hasn't rained. This afternoon we went to the movies and saw "It's Complicated" with Merle Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. A funny movie that we both enjoyed. Afterwards we ate dinner at Chili's.
We received our mail today that Todd forwarded to us. Now we are awaiting our mail-order medications that should be here sometime next week.

Dreary Monday

Before getting out of bed this morning I heard raindrops on the roof of the motorhome.In the middle of the Mohave Desert and it was raining! - and the forecast is for rain off and on most of the week. Oh well, at least it is warm here compared to home. I was telling Tom that rain would be something that I would miss if I lived out here.
We went into the business area of Lake Havasu City. Wahlgreen Drug was administering flu and pneumonia shots. We had gotten flu shots before leaving home but Tom had been unable to get the pneumonia shot. So Tom finally got the pneumonia shot after about 1 1/2 hours. Boy, were they ever slow. I had gotten my pneumonia shot last year when I had heart surgery.
I was in need of a haircut so we then went to a walk-in salon and I was able to get a trim in a much shorter time than the pneumonia shot.
We found a Mexican restaurant, Casa Serrano, where we had lunch. Afterwards we picked up a few items at the grocery store before returning to the motorhome.

Parker Dam

This morning, Sunday, we started the day with a walk. On this island, there is a 4 mile walk that circles the island and we thought we would give it a go. Unfortunately, Travis was not up to walking that much so we had to shorten the walk a little. Walking gave us a chance to take in the surrounding mountains at a more leisurely pace than driving around.
Later in the morning we drove about 15 miles south to Parker Dam. Parker Dam is the deepest dam in the world. Only the top third of the dam is visible. In order to hit bedrock engineers had to go down 235 feet. A road crosses the dam but only cars and pick-up trucks are allowed to do so. Since the Colorado River is the boundary between Arizona and California when we crossed the dam we were in California.

Below the dam along the Colorado River, there is an area called "Parker Strip" that includes RV resorts, parks, restaurants and even a beautifully manicured golf course with real grass. Green grass in this desert environment is a real oddity.

Another 15 miles south and we were in the town of Parker. Since Travis was traveling with us today, we stopped at a Subway to pick up a late lunch. Tom had located a city park where we were able to eat our lunch.

A Lazy Saturday

We seemed to have had trouble getting started this morning. It was really cloudy and dreary looking unlike most mornings in this desert area. After our morning walk we drove to the postoffice to mail off a letter. We then stopped at the London Bridge so Tom could take some pictures.

The area under the bridge along the water is commercialized with little shops, restaurants and boat tours. I did go into the information center to get some information on what to see and do in this area.
This afternoon we spent relaxing and were glad to see the sun make an appearence.
I just read today that on Friday the 15th of January the state of Arizona has decided to close many of their state parks. The Yuma Territorial Prison that we had been to last week is one of the parks that will be closed. This is a real shame that these places will not be open to the public. Arizona seems to be in dire straits. Its been on the news that the state is selling off its state buildings.

Lake Havasu City

After a week in Yuma, we packed up this morning and moved 150 miles north to Lake Havasu City. Traveling on route 95 we passed through Quartzsite as RVers were pouring into that area for the winter gatherings and gem shows. We had been there some years ago and decided we didn't want to stay there this year.

The route was scenic but the towns few and far between. We passed through the town of Parker which made us think of our little grandson with the same name. Traffic was fairly steady the entire way- obviously this is a well-traveled route. Like all roads there were areas of construction being done and traffic was one-way at several points. The 150 miles took us 4 1/2 hours.
We remain in desert terrain but with more hills than the area around Yuma. The Colorado river, beautiful blue in color, was seen from the road as we got near the Havasu region. Lake Havasu is on the Colorado river. Not knowing much about this area we crossed the London Bridge and found a campground in the island area. It was sunny and warm when we arrived and now the temperature is dropping as it does in the desert environment.

Yuma Territorial Prison

This morning we returned to the Yuma Marketplace, one of the fleamarkets we had gone to on Saturday. We had only gone about halfway through the market on Saturday so we thought we would check out the other half. There was no admission fee charged today.
After a lunch at Famous Daves Barbeque Restaurant we went to the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historical Park. This was Arizona Territory's first prison opened in 1876 and closed in 1909. There were 3,069 (including 39 women) prisoners incarcerated here during the 33 years of operation. The most common offense was grand larceny. Several women and men were imprisoned for adultery. Executions were not done at the prison because county government administered capital punishment. After the prison closed the Yuma Union High School occupied the buildings for several years. Later empty cells were occupied by hobos riding the trains and homeless families during the depression were sheltered here.

We've had another sunny day with lots of gusting winds causing the atmosphere to become smoggy. We expected the mountains to look hazy as they did last night but to our surprise they were very clear appearing this evening. The sunsets have been just beautiful here. The western sky has hues of orange and gold while the eastern sky takes on purple and pink colors.

Window Repair

We had an appointment set up for a repairman from RV Glass Solutions to come to our campsite at 1pm to give us an estimate on repairing a window. The small triangular window on the driver's side had moisture between the double panes of glass. A little after 8am the repairman called asking if he could come out earlier so by 9:30am he had been to our site. The window was removed and taken to be repaired.

The repairman with the window returned after 1pm and in about 30 minutes the window was reinstalled. The window looks much better and will be an improvement for the driver's visibility.

The campground had a craft sale today. After the repairman left this morning we walked up to the craft sale. There were the usual craft items for sale- jewelry, rugs, books, pictures, kitchen towels and stuff. I bought a pair of homemade pot holders and a crocheted towel holder. I'm a big spender!!
The weather continues to be warm but today it became quite breezy. We noticed the mountains to the east this evening being hazy, usually these mountains are beautiful in the evening as the sun sets in the west they take on various shades of lavender and purple.

Farmer's Market

This morning we went to Yuma's Main Street to the Tuesday Farmer's Market. The street was blocked off and vendor's lined the street. It was called a farmer's market but there were only 2 vendors selling produce, the rest were selling an assortment of goods that is usually seen at flea markets. But it made an interesting morning.

We then stopped at a shopping center and Sam's Club. We grabbed lunch at Chretin's, another Mexican place. They had a buffet set up but it was poorly attended to and the food was not as good at the restaurant we were at yesterday.
After returning to the campground Travis was given a much needed bath. He seems to get so much dirtier in this environment of sand.

Out and About

Today, Monday, we went in search of the visitor's information center in Yuma which was easily found. It is located on the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Park. After obtaining some visitor information we self-toured the state park. The Depot was used by the army to store and distribute supplies for all the military posts in Arizona and some in Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas. The Depot is located on the Colorado River which was used for the transporting of supplies.

We drove west from Yuma and was quickly in the state of California. We drove out to the Imperial Sand Dunes where riding over the dunes in ATV's or jeeps are done. There were several areas of RVer's camping on Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The dunes looked surreal to us. The sand was barren of vegetation and with the bright blue skies it just looked like a painting.

We stopped at La Fonda Tortilla Factory for lunch. As the name inplies it was Mexican and we thought the food was really good.
After lunch we drove about Yuma and then headed out toward our campground. We traveled through truck farming areas. Fields of lettuces, cabbage, onions, spinach and kale were seen. Harvesting of some of the crops were being done. Some newly planted fields were being irrigated. I'm amazed at the neatness of the fields, the rows are perfectly straight and the crops look weed-free.

After returning to the motorhome we chilled out a short while and then attended the Happy Hour and Burger Feed at the campground. Travis took us for a walk and then as Tom cleaned out the black tank I cleaned the inside of the motorhome.

A Lazy Sunday

This has been a lazy day for us. We did go out to the grocery store to pick up a few items. The grocery store was packed with shoppers. Since the Ravens were playing today we have been watching football games. The Ravens did us proud with their win over the Patriots. This evening there is an ice cream social scheduled which I'm sure we will not miss.
Travis has been taking short walks and seems to be doing better although we really can see that he is slowing up as he gets older.

Visiting the Markets

This morning the campground had a breakfast that we went to. For $4.00 the breakfast consisted of pancakes or biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and a sausage pattie plus orange juice and coffee. It was very tasty as we usually eat oatmeal for breakfast.
Tom had read about 2 flea market/swap meet markets located here in Yuma so we thought we would check them out. The first one we stopped was called Yuma Swap Meet and we were not impressed at all. Seemed like alot of junky stuff and the place was not neatly kept. We were hesitant to go to the second place, the Marketplace, but we did and were pleasantly surprised at the difference. It was very neat and clean and the vendors had nicer merchadise. It was also very large in area and we did not go through the entire market, maybe we will get back another day before leaving the area. At both markets we were charged an admission of $.50 per person, this was a first for us.
After returning to the campground we spent the afternoon during housekeeping chores. The windows got a good washing inside and out. Tom set up the satalite dish so we could receive more than the 6 or 7 snowy channels on the campground's cable.

Yuma

We left Casa Grande this morning and traveled across I-8 to Yuma. At Dateland we stopped for gas and then went into the date shop. Date milkshakes were advertised as being "world famous" so we thought why not try one. Well, we tried date milkshakes but don't think we'll have a return visit for one. Not exactly our cup of tea.
Tom had called the Caravan Oasis campground yesterday but was only able to leave a message. We had not received a return call but went in anyway. There were vacancies so we had no problem getting a site. They were swamped with calls yesterday and were just returning calls as Tom was registering. We plan to stay here a week.
After getting to our site and setting up Tom got out our Passports and discovered that they had expired August 2009. So much for going into Mexico. We really were not anxious to go but was going to get Travis' meds there. Plan B we called Todd and ask that he send meds to us when he stops in at our house.
Our water heater was not functioning on propane, on electric it was fine. So if we do not have electric hook-up at some point we will not have hot water and I don't like cold showers. Seeing an ad for a mobil RV service, Tom called and late afternoon the serviceman came and replaced the control board.
This evening we rode around the area to get a feel for what is where. I was pleasantly surprised when we drove to an area just behind the campgrounds that was large fields of vegetable crops. Amazing what irrigation in the desert can produce. There were several roadside markets along the road selling vegetables.
The weather forecast for this area is for temperatures in the 70's during the day falling into the 40's at night. Certainly better than the cold weather back home.

Arizona and Warmth Finally

We spent the past 2 days in Deming, New Mexico at a Escapees park. It was nice to have a day to catch our breath. I had forgotten Travis' heartworm medication and his flea/tick treatment. We found a veterinarian office and inquired if we could obtain the meds from them. We needed a prescription from our vet. After supplying the phone number to our vet, the office staff made the call. Long story cut short, we were not able to obtain the meds without Travis being tested for heartworm, which had been done in September. Travis has been subjected to so much recently that we said no we will get the meds in Mexico. So we decided that upon leaving Deming we would head for Yuma, Arizona where we will be able to go into Mexico.
We left Deming as it was preparing to be hit today with the cold weather that was hitting the eastern part of the United States. The nighttime temperatures while we were there were below freezing, water hoses had to be disconnected or they were frozen in the morning. We wanted to get to the west of the cold front. We settled in for the night at Casa Grande at another Escapee park. I had called the park prior to our arrival to ask if they had any spaces available. At that time there was one space available with hook-ups and boondocking spaces. They do not take reservations so we just decided to take a chance and luckily a space was still available when we got here. It was also warm here. We could open some windows and be outside without coats. At 9pm it is 47 degrees outside and the motorhome heatpumps have not come on, yet. It just feels so much better to be in warmer weather. Tomorrow we will continue on to Yuma.

The Waltz has Ended…

Today we finished our waltz across Texas.  We are in Deming, New Mexico at the Dream Catchers RV Park, which is an Escapees park.  It is off of I-10 and is a nightly stop over park for a lot of RV’s.  We have decided to stay here for at least two days as we have been traveling everyday since leaving Maryland last Wednesday. 
While coming across Texas, forty miles East of Fort Stockton, we saw one of the biggest wind turbine farms that we have ever seen.  There must have been several hundred wind turbines.  Also, we saw a number of Wind turbine blades being transported.  The blades when installed never look as big as when you see one on the back of a truck.
Today as we got closer to El Paso, there was a lot of Border Patrol activity.  When we stopped at a rest stop for lunch, a helicopter was flying over the area.  On the West side of El Paso we had to go through a Border Patrol inspection station, but was not required to stop.
When we go to Deming, the temperature was in the upper 50’s and sunny.  It felt very good, but the cold is coming this way in two days.  We were going to go to Carlsbad, New Mexico, but the weather report was not looking good so are decision to come to Deming.

The Waltz Continues

Sunday morning we left Duson, Louisiana at 27 degrees and moved through Louisiana into Texas. We seemed to move through the eastern area of Texas at a good pace and continued through Houston without any problems. It is easier, in most instances, to get through big cities on Sundays, traffic is lighter than during the weekdays. We stopped for the night at a Passport American park in Luling, Texas, about 55 miles east of San Antonio. It was a place to stay for the night but nothing to get excited about.
Sunday evening Tom checked our messages on our home phone. A classmate and long ago friend had called me that he was in the Taneytown area and would like to stop by for a visit. The ironic thing about this was that Byron livesin San Antonio. This morning I returned Byron's phone call informing him of my whereabouts. Catching up on our lives we express hopes of visiting someday.
Our travels today continued through Texas. After going through San Antonio we were in the "hill country" of Texas. I found this area a little more scenic but I still feel that Texas is far from a pretty state. This area is sparsely populated with just occasional little towns off the interstate. Texas seems to be more accommodating to larger vehicles in providing parking areas at interchanges to allow for grabbing a bit to eat at restaurants. We stopped for the night at Fort Stockton staying at another Passport park. First impressions did not look too favorable but we figured for the price it would do.

Still Looking for Warm Temperatures.

Tonight we are in Duson, La which is between Lafayette and and Lake Charles in the western part of the state.  The cold temperatures are still chasing us.  Last night it was 27 degrees, brrrrr.  The traffic was light on Interstate 59, but when we got on Interstate 10 it was 2 lanes bumper to bumper moving at 60 to 70 MPH. 

It was a nice clear sunny day, the kind of day that makes for good traveling. 

Last night we stayed in a very nice RV park for $19.26 using Passport America.  Tonight’s campground costs us $36.00 and the wifi does not work.  I am using Windows Live Writer to compose this entry and using a program called “Tetherberry” to connect to the internet. 

Tetherberry consists of 2 programs, one runs on the computer and the other on runs on my Blackberry 9000.  The computer and the blackberry are connected with a standard USB cable.

Tomorrow we will start “Waltzing across Texas.”  Since Texas is 800 miles across on I-10 it will take us several days to get to the other side.  Houston traffic should be light as it is Sunday and will not pose a problem getting through.

New Year's Day Travel

We left Chattanooga about 9am. It was a New Year and the sun was shining but the air was cold. A cold front moved through yesterday and it is predicted that the south will be in cold temperatures for the next 2 weeks. Traffic was light most of the day. We traveled through a corner of Georgia and then through Alabama. We have stopped for the night at a campground, Benchmark Coach and RV Park, close to Meridan, Mississippi. We crossed into Central time when we entered Alabama but our bodies are programmed for Eastern time, in a day or 2 we will readjust.
We did see the New Year in last night but were asleep soon afterward. Travis seems to be doing a little better with his injured leg. We try to keep him from jumping up and down from chairs and the bed and he has been limited in activity with our traveling the past several days.
It is 33 degrees here in Mississippi at 7:30pm. Brrrr! And we were hoping to get out of the cold weather.

Getting a Late Start

When we got up this morning the ground was snow covered but the temperature was about 34 degrees. We took our time eating breakfast and then preparing to leave. By 9am we were ready to go when Tom noticed that we had a flat tire on the car. Oh,my! Well the spare was put on and we left the campground hoping to find that the local Flying J or Bp stations were equipped to repair the tire. We stopped at the Flying J to fill up with gas but were referred to the Bp station for the tire repair. So it was after 10:30am before we were back on the interstate traveling southwest. We drove through rain all morning. The countryside was not snow covered as it had been yesterday. This was a postive sign for us that we were in warmer areas. The motorhome today was noticeably warmer and more comfortable than yesterday. We traveled through Tennessee stopping at a campground in Chattanooga about 4:30 this evening.
Quietly, we will (or maybe not) see the New Year come in. And tomorrow when all those football games are being played we will be moving down through Alabama after skimming through a corner of Georgia.

On the Road to Warmer Weather

The day to get underway and head for warmer winter weather arrived. We left the house at 9:00am to very very cold temps. In fact it was so cold the heater in the motorhome really didn't keep us very warm for most of the day.

At the West Virginia reststop, yes there are still some still opened, Travis jumped off a chair and hurt his right rear leg. He is not putting any weight on it. If it is not better in the next few days, we will have to find a vet and have his leg looked at. We are hoping he just sprained it.

We have stopped for the night at Fort Chiswell, Va. and are planning to get to Alabama tomorrow. The weather report is for freezing rain changing to rain in the morning. If things are too bad, we will stay here for another day.

We had to contact our son because we left several items in the refrigerator at home and have him stop by and take care of them.

Preparing to Travel

Preparations are well underway to head for warmer weather. It is so cold and windy today that we are quite anxious to make our get away. We had several issues that kept us from setting a definite date until they were resolved. Our health insurance provider was changed so we had to be sure we had our new cards in hand before leaving. I had a questionable medical test that needed further evaluation. Our insurance cards arrived and my medical re-evaluation returned normal so we are now good to go. We plan to leave tomorrow morning making our way southward. We probably will not be able to break the motorhome's winterization until our second day due to the cold weather.

Travis Update

We have received the final report on Travis' liver biopsy. He has a mild lymphoplasmacytic cholangiohepatitis which is an inflammatory condition of the liver that could result in fibrosis of the liver. The copper level was normal. He will be treated supportatively with prednisone and ursodiol to reduce the inflammation. Denamarin and Vitamin E will be used to aid inflammation reduction and oxidation of the liver. Taking pills is not a pleasant thing for the poor little guy and pushing pills down his throat is not pleasing to me but we do what we have to do.

Regrouping After the Storm

A winter storm at this holiday time can really wreck plans. We had been invited to a Christmas party on Saturday evening that was called off and then today (Sunday) we were to have a family get together at my brother, Larry's,that was postponed. Oh my, how to reschedule when so many other things are going on in everyone's life!! Well, the Saturday party may be on Wednesday evening. And after talking with family we will be together during the day Christmas eve at Larry's. It is easy when everyone values being together.
Tom spent several hours this morning with the snow blower cleaning out our driveway and walkways plus a neighbors driveway. According to the report in the paper we had about 17.5 inches of snow, quite a snowfall for this area. Taneytown has not done a very good job of clearing the streets. There were 6-7 inches of snow on the roadways today that I'm sure has gotten icy tonight as the temperature dropped. I hope tomorrow plows get out to clear the streets.

Well, all the weather reports were right, we got hit with the big one.  We have anywhere’s from 18 to 24 inches of snow.  All of the local television stations had there news teams on most of the day to cover the snow storm.  After several hours you get tired of hearing the same thing being repeated again and again.

This afternoon I fired up the snowblower and worked on the walkways and the driveway so it will not be so much to tackle tomorrow when the snow is over.  Now I hope the wind does not get up over night and cause a lot of drifting.

All of the events we were planning to attend this weekend were cancelled. 

It Looks Like the Big One is on the Way Here....

The weather reports for the last several days have been saying we might get a little bit of snow this weekend. Yesterday the reports changed to us getting a 6 to 8 inch snow fall. Overnight the reports changed to between 10 to 18 inches with winds up to 35 mph, nice. Its looking more and more like the BIG snow storm is on the way.

I moved the snow blower out of the storage shed, gassed it up, started it and parked it under the deck by the basement door so I won't have to tromp through the snow to get to it Saturday morning. I guess I know how my day is going to be spent.

We have three different Christmas activities scheduled for Saturday. One has already been cancelled and the other two probably will be cancelled as well.

This afternoon Leah and I went to see the movie "The Blind Side." It had a very good story line and was a very enjoyable movie. We recommend it to everyone.

Preliminary Report of the Liver Biopsy

Dr. Jacob, veterinarian internal medicine doctor, called last evening with the preliminary report of Travis' liver biopsy. It appears that Travis has a hepatitis that has been caught in the early stages. He will be treated supportively at this time. A final report should detail any other problems that are present and should be available within the week. Our worse fear was some end-stage liver problem but that does not seem to be at this time. We are hopeful that we will have our little buddy with us for a long time.

Travis' Liver Problems and Family Time

Yesterday morning we had to take Travis down to the Towson area where he had previously been seen by an internist. The internist was to perform a liver biopsy on Travis. It was hard to walk out of that strange place leaving our little buddy behind. Late afternoon we were able to pick him up after the biopsy had been done and he had been observed for a period of time. The biopsy will be sent to Denver and we should know the results by next Wednesday. Travis was very quiet and subdued all evening and night after getting home. We tried to keep him from going up and down stairs and jumping up on the bed or chairs. Today he is beginning to seem more like himself.
We had a December family birthday celebration today. Maddy, our granddaughter, has a birthday on Monday, Beth, our daughter-in-law, birthday is the 23rd and Tom's the 29th. We took everyone to a greenhouse operation that sells pointsettias at this time of the year. Beth is such a lover of plants that we wanted her to get some pointsettias as part of her birthday present. The inventory was beginning to get somewhat low but we were able to find some beautiful plants to decorate our homes. Afterwards we returned back home for lunch and play time with baby Parker. It was a nice family day.

We have been in Virginia this week baby sitting.  Our son had to go out of town on business for the week and our daughter-in-law had to go into work.

In addition to looking  after Parker we also have our older grandson, Anthony.  Anthony is in school everyday, so we only see him for a little while in the morning and in the evening after school.  It has been a good week for us here and we have really enjoyed baby sitting.

Spending Time with Baby Parker

We have been getting in some baby time with Parker. About 2 weeks ago Beth, mommy to Parker, had to go out of town. Tom and I came down to Virginia to keep Parker while daddy, Todd, worked. This week Todd had to go out of town so we are watching Parker while Beth works. Big brother Anthony gets looked after before and after school, also. I've come to the conclusion that Parker is a little bit spoiled and knows just how to squawk in order to get his way and we are as accommodating as we can be, especially when he gives us that dear little smile. He is a charmer. After the first of the year Parker will be going to a babysitter. And hopefully, we will be going to warmer weather in the southwest. Sure will miss Parker!

Parker Comes for Thanksgiving!!!

 

Our grandson, Parker, came to visit us on Thanksgiving Day.  Oh, he also brought his mom and Dad along with his sister and brother.  I guess he needed to bring mom and dad along because he is not old enough to drive and he could not leave his sister and brother home alone.

 

This year we decided to deep fry the turkey.  We have been hearing for years how good deep fried turkey is so we decided to give it a try as we have the required equipment for the task.

We had looked at various videos on how it was done and felt we were up to the task. After getting the oil hot and slowly lowering the turkey into the hot oil, all we had to do was watch and wait the required amount of time. After removing the turkey, we fried some breaded oysters as well.

As with all thanksgiving meals, we had way too much food and it all tasted great. It just makes us stop and think how blessed we are to be able to have food like this and to share it with our loved ones.

We had a very nice day with Todd, Beth, Maddy, Anthony and Parker and was sorry when it was time for them to make the trip back home.

We hope all who reads this blog also had a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Travis' Problems Continue

Tuesday Travis spent the morning at the veterinarian's office having bloodwork done to see if the medication he was placed on about a month ago is having any affect on him. The bile acid was slightly reduced but still very high and the other studies showed little change. Our vet was sending the results to the vet internist we had seen for further recommendations. It is real puzzling as Travis is not showing any outward signs the there is anything wrong. He continues to enjoy walking which we do every day that the weather allows. He gets his little bursts of energy and runs at full speed about the house. And his appetite is good.

Where Has the Time Gone

I can't believe it has been a week since I last posted. The internet hookups has been poor so posting has been next to impossible.
Last Tuesday we spent the day walking the beach. We did go out for a late lunch at the K & W cafeteria which we enjoyed. We watched the rollback dumpsters with the horsewaste being loaded on trucks and hauled out of the campground.
On Wednesday we packed up and left Myrtle Beach driving mostly on route 17. We stopped for the night at Green Acres Campground in Williamston, North Carolina. It was a fair campground. The interior roads were packed sand and and very "dippy".
Thursday we continued on north to Fort Whaley Campground in Whaleyville, Maryland. We had traveled up by way of the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel. We were meeting up with the Traveling Americans (TA) camping club for a weekend rally. There were several TA folks already in the campground and more came after us. We went out to eat as a group to a local restaurant that had a special Thursday night $5.00 burger night. The place was packed but in a fairly short time all 20 or 22 of us were seated.
On Friday the remaining TA folks came into the campground making 15 units altogether camping. We were all parked in fairly close proximity to each other. Again we went out to dinner but this time into Salisbury. Reservations had been made and about 26 went to dinner. A few other folks made other arrangements for dinner.
Tom and I along with another couple, Dave and Libby Hagan, served as hosts for the weekend. Saturday morning we fixed a breakfast of fruit, Danish pastry, English muffins, baked oatmeal and coffee and orange juice. For dinner Libby made a pasta dish and I made barbeque with others bringing potluck dishes of salads, vegetables and desserts.
Sunday morning we had potluck for breakfast. We do eat good at these rallies! The rallies go from Friday evening until Sunday morning. Some of the folks left Sunday but others of us stayed until Monday or later.
Today we came home. We have several things that need to be repaired on the motorhome- an awning was damaged at the Samboree in Frederick, a heat pump is not throwing out heat or cold and our brake buddy stopped working. Since our motorhome will probably need to be away for repairs and the weather could get cold we needed to move things out of the motorhome that could freeze. It was a busy afternoon.

A Quiet Monday

Oh, how quiet the campground is today after the events of the past several days! We walked out on the beach this morning. There were no horses on the beach- just a couple of fishermen and a tractor pulling an apparatus that was raking through the sand. One fisherman had a blue heron standing a short distance behind him waiting for breakfast. Even though the day was cloudy and cool it was enjoyable to walk along the beach.
Tom and I went to the "Broadway at the Beach" shopping at some of the stores and then eating lunch at Landry's Seafood Restaurant. After returning to the campground we took a quiet walk around the campground. Travis just loves walking and sniffing.

Peace and Quiet

Yesterday was another day of much activity in the campground and on the beach. In the morning a 20 mile beach ride took place. Many riders returned to the campground looking like contestants for wet t-shirt contests due to the rain that started after their departure from the campground. In the afternoon/evening Halloween activities with trick or treating and decorating contests were held. There seemed to be some real partying going on but by 11pm all was quiet.
This morning there was again alot of activity as the horses were loaded, some reluctantly, on their trailers to head back to their homes. By noontime, the campground was about back to prehorse arrival status. The campsites where the horses had been were cleaned-up and very little evidence of the horses' presence could be seen. According to the local newspaper there were about 1000 horses and riders involved in this event.

A Parade and a Wedding

Another nice day although a few more clouds and a little cooler than yesterday. After a beach walk we went to Sam's Club to get my sunglasses repaired. A screw holding the earpiece on came out and Tom tried but couldn't get it back in. Then we drove down to Murrell's Inlet and had lunch at a restaurant, Dead Dog Saloon, that had an outside deck where we sat.
After returning to the campground there again was a flurry of activity as preparations were being made by the horsemen for a parade through the campground. When we walked to the end of our street to find a place to sit and watch the parade we were surprised to see the street lined with spectators on golf carts and chairs. The parade was something to see. I knew there were a number of horses in the campground but I was still surprised at the number in the parade, and not all the horses were in the parade. Many were in costume. The cutest was a horse that had dog ears, a big puffy band of "fur" around each leg appearing as a poodle with the female rider dressed in her poodle felt skirt, they won first prize.

There were other clever get ups- unicorns, an orca whale, Indian war horses to name a few.
Afterwards we walked around the campground being careful not to get run over by a horse or golf cart.




Travis has not been bothered by the horses or they by him. Many of the horses are use to the presence of dogs as dogs are at the campsites with the horses and most are never on a leash, even though rules state that they are to be so. As we were walking we noticed a gathering of horseback riders on the beach and then realized that there was a wedding being preformed with the bride and groom on horses. The attendants (a best man and "man" of honor)were also on horseback and the officiating minster was on one of the decking structures that is used to cross over the dunes to the beach.

Throughout the day horses can be heard whinnying in the campground. Once darkness sets in the horses become quiet and their presence is unnoticed.

A Beautiful Day in Horse Paradise

The weather has been getting better each day. Yesterday we broke out our shorts as the temperature was in the lower 80's even though it was overcast most of the day. Today has been a clear sunny day although a little cooler (upper 70's).
Walking out on the beach this morning we encountered numerous folks and their horses also enjoyimg the beach. Some horses seem a little skittish of the ocean and sand. Others seemed to enjoy wading into the surf.

Of course walking on the beach or even in the campground with horses causes one to be careful where one steps- they don't clean up after their horses. Yesterday I mentioned that there were horses camped beside us and a license plate was from Wyoming- well that was the plate on the truck's front, the rear plate states "North Carolina" which is the correct location.
Tom and I went out shopping today- Bass Pro Shop, Tanger Outlets and finally Sam's Club.
We walked about the campground this evening. There is an area set up with vendors selling their wares of western clothing, tack and even dog supplies.

There are also some food services- a barbeque trailer and trailer selling corn on the cob. The campground is a hive of activity.

This morning (Wednesday) we drove up to Calabash, North Carolina which is just north of the Myrtle Beach area to see about getting some fresh shrimp. We were in luck, the shrimp boats were docked and the shrimpers were selling shrimp.

When we returned to the campground we were diverted to a different road to enter the campground. The horse trailers were arriving loaded with horses.
After a lunch of shrimp salad sandwiches- boy, they were good- we walked out on the beach. There were horse back riders in both directions. It is unbelievable the number of horses in the campground. Most of the trailers occupy at least 2 campsites. The horses are in portable corrals or tethered to a line strung between 2 trees. Beside our campsite there are a horse and a pony corralled together, neither that likes being separated from one another. According to the truck's license plate they are from Wyoming.

Directly across from us is another corral with 3 horses, they are from Georgia. There has been a steady parade of riders riding about the campground. I believe this campground is the only campground having this beach riding event. Yesterday afternoon big rollback dumpsters were brought into the campground and situated throughout, today signs have been posted on these dumpsters that they are for horse waste only. I'm not sure who is cleaning up the beach after the horses,

Myrtle Beach

The past weekend started out on Thursday and Friday being cool and cloudy. And then Saturday we had rain all day. The rain would not have been so bad if we had not been parked in the infield of the racetrack that became a huge mud pit. Tom and I did an hour of security duty on Saturday when the rains were the hardest and were soaked below the area of our rain coats. Nothing like wet clothes and then not having the ability to get them dried. We had very limited electric and water hook-ups. Thankfully, we were with friends that made the weekend enjoyable. After the closing program on Sunday we headed south spending the night in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. On Monday we continued on to our destination of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
We are staying at Lakewood Campground that is on the beach. The weather was cool and rainy yesterday, today (Tuesday) it is warmer but still cloudy and raining tonight. We did walk out on the beach this morning. After tonight's rain it is to clear off and be nice weather for the remainder of the week. This weekend, aside from being Halloween, is a time for bringing horses to the beach. From what we understand there will be a parade of costumed horse riders on the beach this weekend. Should be interesting.

A Fall Get Away

The fall Maryland State Samboree will be this weekend in Frederick. We will be going in tomorrow so Tom can go golfing on Friday. Sounds like it should be a good weekend as a number of folks from the Traveling Americans are planning to attend. Hope the weather stays nice but according to the forecast rain is expected on Saturday. You might know it, Travis was groomed today- it seems to always rain whenever Travis is freshly groomed.
Our plans are to go to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for several days before heading back up to the Ocean City area of Maryland for a weekend campout with the Traveling Americans. Getting the motorhome ready to go out is time consuming so when we go I much prefer to stay out for a spell.

A Visit to a Veterinary Internist

This morning we took Travis to Towson to be seen by an Internist. The doctor reviewed the information that our vet had forward to him and then examined Travis. The exam did not reveal any obvious problem, possibly a little enlarged liver. It was then recommended that he have an ultrasound done and a needle biopsy done, if indicated at that time. So the ultrasound was done and we were surprised when the needle biopsy was not done. The ultrasound did not show anything grossly abnormal with the liver. The area of the gall bladder indicated some inflammation but no large stones. The recommendation from this point was to have a liver biopsy (not the needle biopsy) or to treat medically and see if the bloodwork shows improvement. We opted to treat medically so we have 3 prescriptions of medications to give to the little guy, one is a veterinarian medication and the other 2 are human meds but at a much lower dosage. Our local Epic pharmacist is able to prepare the medications we need, how lucky!

A Week of Sad News

In the last post I mentioned that a club member of the Traveling Americans had been admitted to the hospital and was not doing well. On Tuesday we learned that Russ Bishop had passed away. He had been fighting a bone cancer for 4 years ever since Tom and I had learned to know him and his wife, Sandy. Russ was a gentle man with a quiet sense of humor. He was someone you could enjoy being around. Today we attended his funeral with many other members of the T.A. club and afterwards another couple in the club invited everyone back to their house for the reception following the funeral. We will all certainly miss Russ. We are hopeful that Sandy will continue to camp with us on our weekends.
We also learned of another dear friend of long standing that has a brain cancer is losing her battle. By email her husband tells us that she is in need of someone to be with her continuously. She was such a fun person with lots of spirit to be around.
Then there is our little buddy, Travis. After having bloodwork done in preparation for removal of a little growth on his eyelid and teeth cleaning there were some enzymes elevated. So further blood work was preformed that indicated something is wrong that involves the liver. We are now scheduled on Monday to take him to an internist for further evauation and a possible ultrasound study. So far he does not have any outward signs of any problems. The eyelid and teeth surgery will be delayed until the problem is diagnosed and it is felt he will be okay having anesthesia.

A Relaxing Weekend

Well another weekend with the Traveling Americans has passed. We camped together this past weekend at Twin Bridges Campground near Chambersburg, Pennsylvannia. It was a small group of 6 RV units. The weather after Friday's cloudy, misty day was near perfect fall weather on Saturday and Sunday. It was nice enough that we ate our meals outdoors, a little chilly for breakfast but we made do. Friday evening 5 couples went out to eat at a restaurant prior to the 6th couple getting to the campground. Saturday morning the host couples furnished a nice continental breakfast. Saturday evening dinner and Sunday morning breakfast we had pot luck. The campground was quiet with a few other campers. Tom and I drove to McConnellsburg on Saturday, traffic was fairly heavy in the area.
Word was received at the campout that a fellow member that has been fighting cancer for several years had been admitted to the hospital and was not doing well. We all had this man and his wife in our thoughts and prayers throughout the weekend.

Mayberry Reunion

Yesterday started out to be a day of uneasiness with Parker's formula problems. Todd did call and report that a co-worker of his was able to obtain some formula at a hospital. We sure hope this little guy soon gets on the formula that will agree with him. Through all this he is gaining weight which is most important.
In the afternoon Tom and I went back to Mayberry for a reunion with folks that have any connection with that little town. It was a real nice afternoon. It has become a yearly event but we never know who might show up from one year to the next. This year a man that was in my class at school was there along with some of his other siblings and their spouses. We had not seen each other since school days. It was great to meet this way. We each bring a dish of food to share and this year fried chicken was provided. In years past we have had burgers and hot dogs. The chicken was a nice change and no one had to stand over grills cooking it.

Worried about Parker

Our grandson, Parker, is having problems with finding a formula that agrees with him. This morning we got a phone call from our son asking us if we could find a store that has Nutramigen AA in stock. This formula is very hard to find and very expensive. We were not successful in our search.

Parker has gotten to a point where he does not want to take a bottle and has us all very concerned. We hope this formula will agree with him and help the poor little guy get settled down and feeling better.

It was a Good Sunday...

Today was a good Sunday. We went to church and afterwards we drove to Columbia, Md where we met Ray and Agnes Elderd, good friends we got to know thru motor homing. We had lunch at Bertucci's and an all too short visit with them.

He is only a month old, but we can see him growing already. The internet and digital cameras makes sending pictures easy.

Mark Martin won the NASCAR race in New Hampshire. The Ravens win in San Diego and I spent the whole day with my best girl.

Yep, it was a very good Sunday indeed!!

The Weekend Comes to an End

Saturday evening after our potluck dinner we again circled the fire pit for a campfire and conversation. Just wish the mosquitos were better trained!
Sunday morning we had another potluck meal as our breakfast. I especially enjoy these breakfasts. We always seem to have a nice variety of breakfast foods, egg dishes, casseroles, breads and fruits. Tom and I went down to the Bass Pro Shop, north of Richmond, later in the day. There is a really nice restaurant there so we shopped and then we had dinner. After returning to the campground, we sat around talking with others. Later in the evening we had pie and ice cream around the final campfire for this outing.
This morning we had breakfast of ham and cheese on croissants before packing up and heading in various directions. We wanted to get on the road before the traffic got too heavy which we did and arrived home at 1:45pm. Some of the group went south toward Myrtle Beach instead of going home. We would have liked to joined them but appointments and commitments that prevented us from doing so- maybe, next year!

Labor Day Weekend- 2009

Thursday we left home and travelled down into Virginia to a campground south of Fredericksburg to meet up with the Traveling Americans. Our campout officially didn't start until Friday but there were 3 other couples from the group also at the campground on Thursday. For dinner we drove into the town of Bowling Green and ate at the Cafe on Main Street.
Friday the remaining campers of our group arrived making, I believe, 13 units, a real nice group. Again we had to go out to eat, this time at an Italian restarant, Romas, in Bowling Green. Afterwards we returned to sit around a campfire and enjoy one anothers company.
Today Saturday we started with a continental breakfast, provided by the host couple. Then everyone went their own ways doing/going wherever. We stayed at the campground visiting with others that stayed. The weather has been just wonderful. This evening we are having a pot luck dinner. This morning before breakfast I made a peach pie for Sunday evening. Because of the reduced electric (30 amps as opposed to 50) I wanted to make the pie before it became warmer in the day and when I was not cooking other things. Running the microwave along with air conditioning can cause problems. I had made a black bean salad before leaving home to be taken to the pot luck supper tonight.
